Dieses Buch faßt in herausragender Weise den aktuellen Stand der Erkenntnisse zu den Mitgliedern unseres Sonnensystems zusammen. Es wurde von führenden Planetenforschern geschrieben und berücksichtigt die Ergebnisse aller großen Forschungsmissionen der letzten Jahre. Die reichhaltige Ausstattung mit Fotos wird durch erläuternde Illustrationen und Grafiken des bekannten Zeichners Don Davis erweitert. Text, Bilder und Zeichnungen ergänzen sich zu einem faszinierenden Gesamtbild des "neuen" Sonnensystems wie es sich nach den Erfolgen der Planetenmissionen der letzten 25 Jahre den Wissenschaftlern darstellt.

Der Themenbereich wird in etwas unüblicher Weise angegangen, indem nicht mit den Beobachtungstatsachen, sondern mit Forschungsmethoden und Theorien zur Entstehung des Sonnensystems begonnen wird. Daran anschließend werden Phänomene behandelt, die das Sonnensystem als Ganzes beeinflussen, wie die Eigenschaften der Sonne, das interplanetare Medium und die Rolle des äußeren Kometenreservoirs. Danach folgen Kapitel zu den einzelnen erdähnlichen Planeten und solche zu ihren Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden in der Struktur der Oberflächen, des inneren Aufbaus und der Physik ihrer Atmosphären. Gegen die erdähnlichen Planeten werden die Gasriesen gestellt, denen eigene Kapitel zu innerer Struktur, Eigenschaften der Atmosphären und Ringsystemen gewidmet sind.

Alleine fünf der 28 Kapitel des Buches befassen sich mit besonders interessanten Mitgliedern der Mondsysteme der Gasriesen. Io, Europa, Ganymed und Callisto, Titan, Triton und Charon werden ausführlich vorgestellt. Den Abschluß bilden, wie bei Büchern über das Sonnensystem zu erwarten, die kleinen Körper, wie kleinere Monde, Kometen und Asteroiden. In diesen Kapiteln sind z.B. die Ergebnisse der Vorbeiflüge an Ida und Gaspra, die Kollision von Shoemaker-Levy 9 mit Jupiter und die hellen Kometen Hyakutake und Hale-Bopp verarbeitet. Am Ende liefert das Buch noch einen Ausblick zur Problematik des Lebens im Sonnensystem und zu Planetensystemen um andere Sterne.

Das Buch entspricht erschöpfend dem Wunsch, mehr über unsere unmittelbare kosmische Heimat zu erfahren. Insgesamt ist "The New Solar System" in Ausstattung und Inhalt so überzeugend, daß es kaum Wünsche offen läßt und jedem an Planetenforschung Interessierten wärmstens zu empfehlen ist.
