Ungewöhnlich genug, beginnt der Autor mit der Stellung des Sonnensystems als Ganzem in der Hierarchie des Kosmos und beschreibt kurz die Struktur unserer Heimatgalaxie sowie Lage und Bewegung der Sonne und ihrer Planeten innerhalb dieser Galaxie. Dadurch gelingt es dem Buch, die Beschreibung in das gesamte Weltbild einzubetten und eine vom restlichen Universum isolierte Betrachtung zu vermeiden.

Der grundlegende Buchaufbau erscheint dann aber schon zwingend: von der Sonne in mehreren Stationen nach außen. Jeder der großen Planeten ist eine solche Station, aber auch viele der Satelliten der Planeten wurden vom Autor als eine Station beachtet. Eigene Kapitel finden sich somit auch zum Erdmond, den beiden Marsmonden, Io, den drei restlichen galileischen Jupitermonden, Titan, Enceladus und Triton. Die kleinen Körper des Sonnensystems werden mit Gaspra, Shoemaker-Levy und Halley ebenfalls nicht vergessen.

Das große Format des Buches kommt besonders bei hochauflösenden Aufnahmen vorteilhaft zur Geltung. Solche beeindruckenden Aufnahmen gibt es hauptsächlich in den Kapiteln über Erde, Erdmond, Mars und den Jupitermond Io. Zusammenstellungen der grundlegenden Zahlenwerte zu den Planeten finden sich in Anhängen am Ende des Buches ebenso wie Beschreibungen aktueller Teleskope, Daten zu Raumsondenmissionen und Anregungen zu eigenen Beobachtungen.
