Dieses Buch zeigt für jeden Tag des Mondzyklusses eine ganzseitige Fotografie des Mondes und deckt so den kompletten Zeitraum von Neumond über Vollmond bis Neumond ab. Damit ist es ein Führer für jede mögliche Mondphase und zeigt über 29 Tage deutlich die jeweils am besten zu beobachtenden Merkmale auf der Mondoberfläche.

Die Fotos wurden von erfahrenen Amateurastronomen erstellt und sind an einem 40cm-Teleskop mit einem feinkörnigen und niedrig empfindlichen Film entstanden. So erhält man sehr scharfe und qualitativ hochwertige Bilder der Mondentwicklung die gut dem visuellen Eindruck entsprechen und den Betrachter in die Lage versetzen, aufgrund der Beleuchtungsmuster einzelne Geländemerkmale schnell zu erkennen. Besonders die Fotos die wenige Tage nach oder vor Neumond entstanden sind, sind sehr beeindruckend geworden.

Auf den Bildern des kompletten Mondzyklus sind die gut beobachtbaren Merkmale in der Nähe des Terminators beschriftet, zu jedem Bild gibt es einen erläuternden Text, der die Beobachtungsmöglichkeiten sowie die sichtbaren Merkmale darstellt. Ausgewählte Gebiete des Mondes werden in hoch vergrößerten Ausschnitten gesondert vorgestellt, um so bestimmte Geländeformen herauszuheben und zu erklären. Alle Geländemerkmale sind entsprechend der gültigen IAU-Terminologie benannt. Kurze Abschnitte zu Finsternissen und ergänzende Anhänge dürfen nicht fehlen. Bei den Anhängen steht besonders der nach Gruppen geordnete Anhang der benannten Geländemerkmale auf dem Mond hervor.

Dieser Atlas ist ein wertvolles Standardwerk für Amateure, die sich mit Mondbeobachtungen mit kleinen Teleskopen befassen wollen.

The Photographic Atlas of the Moon is a day-by-day photographic guide to observing the features of the Moon through a small telescope. Compiled by three keen amateur astronomers, each image was produced using a 40cm telescope and high-resolution low speed film. Whole Moon images are provided for each day of the 29-day lunar cycle, with labelled features and accompanying descriptive text. Selected lunar features are shown at high magnification to highlight and clearly illustrate certain regions. All lunar features are labelled using current IAU terminology. A comprehensive set of appendices detail the phases of the Moon, give a chronology of lunar selenography, and index all lunar features named in the text. This atlas is an invaluable reference guide for amateurs engaging in lunar observations with a small telescope.
