Der Autor beschäftigt sich in diesem Buch mit dem bisherigen Verhalten des Meteorstroms der Leoniden, der in der Vergangenheit bereits zu spektakulären Sternschnuppenschauern geführt hat und bereitet den Beobachter damit auf die erwartete Rückkehr eines möglichen starken Schauers in den Jahren 1998 bis 2000 vor.

Das Buch beginnt mit den ersten bekannten Aufzeichnungen über Meteorschauer in der moderneren westlichen Geschichte. Dabei wird die wissenschaftliche Debatte, die nach dem spektakulären Ereigniss von 1833 begann und die zu einem verstärkten Interesse der Astronomen an Meteoren führte, besonders intensiv nachgezeichnet. Eingebettet in die Geschichte der Leoniden stellt der Autor die Entwicklung des Wissens über Meteore und der Techniken zu ihrer Beobachtung dar. Das gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts entwickelte Handwerkszeug kann heute von jedem Amateur genutzt werden, um seinen Teil zur Meteorbeobachtung beizutragen. In der Zeit nach 1950 wurde dann das Wissen über Meteore durch Erkenntnisse aus Raumfahrtmissionen ergänzt. Es gelingt dem Autor, die daraus erwachsenden neuen Erkenntnisse, insbesondere den Zusammenhang zwischen Kometen und Meteoren, zu vermitteln. Der letzte Teil des Buches widmet sich den Aussichten für die Leoniden in den Jahren 1998 bis 2000, den zu erwartenden Beobachtungsbedingungen und den Vorbereitungen, die ein Amateur zur sinnvollen Meteorbeobachtung treffen sollte.
